While attending the Creative Connections meetup here in Denver I received two free tickets to the Get Motivated Business Seminar from Carol Naff with Mariner Company. This was good timing, as the Indie Arsenal creative group that we are members of has a fourth quarter theme of Motivation. Motivating yourself, your clients and others. As it turns out, Flipbox Studios is having a very motivating fourth quarter!
The seminar had quite a lineup of speakers, including Laura Bush, General Colin Powell, Rudy Giuliani, Zig Ziglar, John Elway and Terry Bradshaw just to name a few. It was very motivating to see all of these successful people on one stage. They each told stories from their life experiences and provided advice on how to apply their success in business. Although the pictures I took weren't the best quality, I have included a couple anyways.

Above, former Denver Broncos quarterback, John Elway speaks on motivation, determination and teamwork.

On behalf of Flipbox Studios, I'd like to say thanks to Jonathan and Josh with The Mercantile Shops for the new T-shirts. Flipbox Studios is currently working with The Mercantile Shops to design and develop a website for The Woven Project. The Woven Project consists of Jonathan and Josh, a couple of guys in Boston looking for ways to support their local economy and promote sustainability in such things as economy, environment, food, energy, and transportation just to name a few. Be sure to check back in the next month to see their new site, and maybe even order some apparel. Check out the shirts Nate and I chose to support below. Thanks again guys!

On Saturday Nate and I took a little "field trip" to see the Peter Max exhibit at the Road Show Company Gallery in Denver, CO. It was very nice to get out from behind the computer and experience some professional fine art; After all, where would web design be without fine art? Unfortunately, Peter Max has his own photographer and does not allow photography inside of the studio. So, Nate and I whipped out the handy iPhone and snapped a couple of photos of the gallery looking in. Check them out below!

I was recently contacted by Rapid Growth about my hands-on training through Idea Foundry. Check out the article, these guys are really onto something great! I strongly recommend their training. It was hands down the best classroom training experience I have attended (x's 2). Training in a vacation setting... genius! I can't wait for an advanced ExpressionEngine class to come around. Great job guys!
Oh and double bonus: I also just discovered Flipbox Studios and I made the Train-ee news... for making the news! HA. What an exciting week! Thanks Mike!
Thanks again to everyone who made the Southern Fried ExpressionEngine Training possible!

I'm pleased to announce that Flipbox Studios has been accepted into the ExpressionEngine Pro Network. ExpressionEngine (also referred to as EE) has played a large role in our success over the past year and in 2009 we decided to use EE as our primary CMS appliation.
Many thanks to the EllisLab team and community members for making our EE experience taste so sweet. If you aren't familiar with ExpressionEngine, take five and check them out.

I have always been a fan of the saying, work hard, play hard. Maybe that is part of why I was able to enjoy San Antonio so much. After all, they do call it "Training in a Vacation Setting." Our class interaction didn't stop when the daily instruction ended. Mr and Mrs Boyink with Train-ee, along with the guys over at Idea Foundry had optional evening activities planned for the whole group. We were able to see some of San Antonio, and "Remember the Alamo." (It is sooo small!) Here are a couple of pictures of our walk down the Riverwalk and our visit to the Alamo. Thanks again to Mrs Boyink for the pictures. To see more Train-ee pictures visit the Train-ee Flickr Page.

It was good to see the guys with Collective Idea again! (I attended Ruby on Rails Training they instructed last year while employed with Hotcards.com.)

Mike had a few exercises for us in the last days of class. I am excited to get home and really dig into this CMS on my own. There is so much to learn. Below is an image of a chunking exercise, which opened our eyes to the process of bringing the design into EE. Very useful!

Mike also organized a group exercise that he used several previous client site maps to create the ExpressionEngine architecture. Not to be confused with Information Architecture. This was a bit confusing for a designer's mind! Below are a couple of pictures of Nick (also a scholarship winner) and I doing some EE Architecture for a church website. This really made us understand all of the work put into the developer's proposal, before knowing if you will even get the job.

Here is a good one of Mike turning on the lightbulb for Nick... the famous "Ah-hah" moment caught on film! Mike Boyink wasn't lying, he really did "bring him the ExpressionEngine lightbulb moment." Although I think I was too focused to catch it myself.

Finally, I semi-understand what Nate is up to on his coding days!

Hello from Texas!
Just wanted to share some cool stuff happening here at The Inn on the Riverwalk. There couldn't have been a more perfect (or convenient) place to have the EE training while in San Antonio. The Inn is a quite and very private B&B. We wake up to the smell of breakfast, which is amazing! Our class eats a homemade breakfast and afterwards, we move some tables around and get to the good stuff! Thanks to Mrs Boyink, who we have nicknamed "Mom", I have some pictures of the EE class in action!
One really cool thing about Mike Boyink's class, he uses live examples of EE sites, built by him, to help us understand his instruction. He does an excellent job of explaining step by step, showing live examples, and then walking us through what he just taught so we are able to do it ourselves. Hands on learning! Below are a couple of images of Mike instructing the class. ((Notice the dominance of Macs!
))

The EE class also had an "Open Mike Night". This happened mid-week when our brains were on the verge of overload. We ate pizza as a group (Thanks Mr and Mrs Boyink!) and then had the opportunity to ask questions and pick the expert's brain.
Oh, and to put a cherry on top, it is warmer here in San Antonio, TX than anywhere else in the Nation this week!

I am proud to be the scholarship winner of the Train-ee Southern Fried ExpressionEngine Class that will be held later this month in San Antonio. I just received confirmation from Leslie Camacho over at ExpressionEngine. Thanks to Train-ee, the gang at ExpressionEngine, and all of the sponsors who made this possible! Updates to follow on the sponsors.

It's taken longer than we expected, but we are almost done with the new Flipbox Studios. There are still a few tweaks that we need to make and we are in the process of updating the portfolio and converting some old weblog and resources entries to our new Expression Engine CMS but it should be polshed up soon. What do you think? We hope you enjoy it!
